Birding in India
India is one of the worlds premium birding hotspots, with more than 1200 species of birds recorded it is in the top 10 countries with most bird species.
One of the main reasons for such a high diversity is the number of bio-geographical regions which India is split into: Trans Himalayan, Western Himalayas, Eastern Himalayas, Desert, Semi-arid, Gangetic plain, Central India, Deccan Plateau, Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats, North East, Coasts and the Andaman Nicobar Islands. Coupled with this it is also a stop over for Palaearctic Migratory Birds, with November to the end of January being particularly good. Summer time is when the songsters come out such as, Koel, Sharma’s, Pitta’s and Cuckoos, as well as many colourful and exuberant species like the magnificent Asian Paradise Flycatcher.
