Safaris and Tiger in India go hand in hand with most tours focussing on the Parks of Northern and Central India in search of this alluring beast, with many not realising that the parks of South India offer the same Tiger sighting experiences coupled with the unique opportunity of seeing many wildlife species that are not found in the wild anywhere else on earth.
A tour concentrating on the parks of South India, encompassing an area known as the Western Ghats. One of the most eco-rich wildlife areas in India, the Western Ghats is renowned for its high percentage of endemic species: with 35% of plants, 48 percent of reptiles, 42 percent of the fishes and 75 percent of the amphibians which inhabit the rain forests regarded as endemic species. As well as this staggering diversity there are also 10 mammals and 13 birds recorded which are regarded as endemic to the Western Ghats.
Concentrating on Periyar and Nagarhole National Parks, the focus of this tour will be the endemic mammals of Southern India which include the Nilgiri Tahr (Hemitragus hylocrius), Lion Tailed Macaque (Macaca silenus), Nilgiri Langur (Trachypithecus johnii), Travancore Flying Squirrel (Petinomys fuscocapillus), Grizzled Giant Squirrel (Ratufa macroura), Stripe-necked Mongoose (Herpestes vitticollis) and Nilgiri Marten (Martes gwatkinsi). Of course we will not be forgetting the larger more widespread mammals that one can see here such as Elephant (Elephas maximus), Sloth Bear (Melursus ursinus), Tiger (Panthera tigris), Leopard (Panthera pardus), Gaur (Bos gaurus) and Dhole (Cuon alpinus). This area especially Tamil Nadu also offers the best chance of seeing the extremely rare and elusive Rusty Spotted Cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus)
If you are the sort of person who doesn’t follow the crowds and would follow their own path to new and exhilarating experiences then this is the tour for you.
