Why an Indian Safari
Whenever most people hear the word Safari they automatically think of Africa and the open savannahs, teaming with wildlife as depicted on National Geographic and the numerous Wildlife Documentaries, but as many people are beginning to discover India is a magical and vibrant country teaming with culture and wildlife which is arguably unrivaled anywhere in the world.
Due to its varied eco-regions ranging from the Deserts of Rajasthan through the Tropical Forests of the Western Ghats, the open floodplains of the Northeast and the high altitude range of the Himalayas, as well as, seemingly being the bridging gap between the two great continents of Africa and Asia it has become a melting pot for wildlife and one of the Top 10 Bio-diverse Countries of the world. It is home to over 400 species of mammals, 408 Reptiles and over 1200 species of birds. India’s impressive diversity is further enhanced by having 15 out of the 36 Species of Felidae (Cats) more than any other country in the world, and is the only place in the world where you can see 3 out of 4 of the “True” big cats, Genus Panthera; Tiger, Lion and Leopard.
Other large mammals found in India include; Elephant, Rhino, Gaur (The largest Bovine Species), Yak. Some of the smaller and fascinating species found in India are Pygmy Hog, Hispid Hare, Mouse Deer, Binturong and Marbled Cat. Of course when it comes to wildlife the Royal Bengal Tiger is the Flagship of Indian Wildlife. The Tiger is one of the most recognizable and popular predators of the world's charismatic mega-fauna. Unfortunately, it is now on the verge of extinction with India being arguably the best place in Asia to see this hypnotic creature in the wild.
For birders with over 1200 species of birds India is a haven for ornithologists, some of the best species that can be seen are Ibisbill, Greater Adjutant, Bengal Florican, Spoonbill Sandpiper, Spot-Billed Pelican, Hodgson’s Bushchat, Finns Baya, Black-breasted Parrotbill, Himalayan Monal, Masked Finfoot and White-winged Duck.
With such an impressive range of Biodiversity it is easy to see why India is now the ultimate wildlife enthusiast’s dream destination. All our safaris are private and designed to give you the ultimate wildlife experience.
